Little League coaches needed
Lethbridge Little League Baseball is able to accommodate a number of volunteers as coaches of all age players, but have a specific shortage of coaches for our 4-5 and 6-7-year-olds programs.
They provide training and can offer a manageable but significant opportunity to work directly with kids. At the end of the season, they will provide reference letters from our organization. Networking-wise, we have a high number of educators who coach, are on our board, or have children in our programming.
If interested, please contact Craig through email at [email protected].

Volunteer to aid in improving adult literacy
The Read On Adult Literacy and Learning program at the Main Branch of the Lethbridge Public Library assists adults with gaining basic literacy skills up to about a grade 10 level. For a bit of background, most of our students speak English as a second or additional language, are working and have families here. Many are also foreign trained professionals.
Anyone interested in volunteering with Read On can register for training through the website at http://www.lethlib.ca/readon#. Once registration is received, we would have a follow up conversation to see if our program meets expectations. From there we would send out pre-training videos and a manual. There is about 4 hours of initial training involved, which includes a one-hour in-person health and safety orientation (starting as early as Saturday, September 24th from 9:00 to noon). Further professional development opportunities take place throughout the year. We require a police check, but we cover the fee. We ask that our volunteers commit to the program for at least six months. A job description can be found below.

Raise the grade Tutors (AND other BGC opportunities)
Our RTG programming serves youth aged 11-18 and will begin running Sept 30th with a tutor/mentor onboarding on this date, with youth programming projected to begin the first week of October (October 3rd).
Programming will run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 3pm-6pm onsite at our Youth Centre (227-12B Street North) and includes an amalgamation of both tutoring services as well as meaningful mentorship moments.
Our program focusses on four pillars of provision/support, these being:
At BGC “Learning” is defined as:
“all forms of education, skill development, training, and acquisition of knowledge leading to productive career and life paths.”
We appreciate and recognize the value in both educational experience and lived experience and encourage volunteers, staff, and youth to recognize and blend these experiences into their service provision and attendance as well. Our goal with RTG is to provide support and attention to youth that they may not be receiving in schools or home, and these supports are supplemented through these valuable one-on-one & group moments.
Throughout the years, we have requested volunteers to commit to a minimum of a semester of volunteering, this provides stability within the services and the relationships created. Volunteers are not expected to be available for all three days programming, but it would be greatly appreciated! J
One extra large gap in services we experience is from April-August (when post secondary is released for the year) so we extra appreciate the support of summer students!
We are always looking for continued feedback from our volunteers so regular check-ins and debriefing sessions will be a significant part of our working relationship, as the wellbeing of our volunteers and youth are of utmost importance to us. These check-ins also allow room for volunteers to contribute ideas for enhancement or additions to programming – we want to offer opportunities for both our youth and our volunteers to thrive and grow as both professionals and individuals!
Beyond the RTG volunteer opportunities, individuals can also opt to volunteer during our Youth Drop-In nights, which run Monday and Tuesday from 6:30-9:00pm. Activities for these evenings are a little more relaxed and focus on creating safe spaces & relationships, and include physical activities, tabletop games, leadership activities, and much more!
The youth that we have the opportunity to work with are considered a vulnerable population, and as such, we require both a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector check from volunteers. BGC will reimburse volunteers for the fee for their CR/VS check after their fourth week of volunteering (if this is a barrier for volunteers they can always contact me to plan alternative arrangements).
We will also offer volunteers opportunities and space as they arise for Professional Development such as:
As well as opportunities for celebration, recognition, and continued connection such as galas and monthly event nights!
We can also provide references for future jobs, scholarships, and continued education applications upon request J
